At the end of April Italy was hit by severe frost. Especially the area of Tuscany in particular the Maremma, but also other areas such as in the Veneto basins and in exposed areas. Many farmers tried to raise the temperatures in the vineyards by setting hay and timber bales on fire. In some cases it helped but where temperatures have been below freezing for many hours, the damage to production may be consistent. Regions such as Abruzzo have been less affected.
It’s too early to take stock of the damages. It depends on several factors, such as how far the flowering were and the growth of the buds.
