24 hectares
since 1700
Fattoria Ambra, owned by the Romei Rigoli family since 1870, is situated near the Ombrone river and the Villa Medicea of Poggio a Caiano, drawing its name from Lorenzo Il Magnifico’s 15th-century poem “Ambra”.
The 24-hectare vineyards are located in the hills of Montalbiolo, Elzana, Santa Cristina in Pilli, and Montefortini Podere Lombarda, four of Carmignano’s most esteemed crus. We produce Carmignano DOCG and two Carmignano Riserva DOCG wines, each sourced from one of these four crus.
The blends primarily feature Sangiovese, along with the required Cabernet, Canaiolo, and other approved red berry varieties.
Additionally, Fattori Ambra offer a younger Carmignano, “Barco Reale,” the traditional rosè wine “Vin Ruspo” and Vin Santo di Carmignano.
Notably, Cabernet, historically known as “Uva Francesca” (“French Grape”), has been cultivated in Carmignano since its introduction by the Medici family in the 1700s. Carmignano has been synonymous with fine wine in Italy since the 13th century. Its reputation led Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, to decree strict appellation controls in 1716.
The borders of this ancient appellation remain unchanged, making it one of Italy’s smallest DOCG appellations.
Since the 2018 vintage, the wines have been certified organic.
