Early in the Sixties Mr. Pierino began producing his own wine starting off a quality trend that remains a key feature of our company nowadays. Pierino’s son and daughter, Claudio and Mariagrazia, are now managing the company in their father’s footsteps.

The Winery is located in Castiglione Tinella, within the Province of Cuneo, between the Lower Langa and the Monferrato Regions. Rolling hills almost completely covered in vineyards are visible as far as the eye can see and make Castiglione Tinella one of the liveliest towns in Italy. The cliffs running down towards the valleys Tinella and Belbo frame the vineyards and the wood patches, creating a unique landscape.

The extension of the vineyards allows our company’s production to cover all types of wines available in the South of Piedmont. Icardi’s style is renowned around the world for its significantly fruity, refined, clean and elegant wines. The balanced flavour of both regular and “more important” wines can be appreciated immediately after production.

Wine ratings Luca Maroni:

100-point scheme:

The wine ratings from Luca Maroni are based on a 100-point scheme. However, there is always a maximum given of 99 points on the ground that there is no such thing as a perfect 100-point wine.

In his annual Annuario dei Migliori Vini Italiani, the wine critic assesses wines according to three categories:

First category: Consistency, in which colour and aroma intensity of the wines are evaluated.

Second category: Balance, which highlights the balance of aromatic components like acidity, fruit and tannins.

Third category: Integrity, in which the wines are analysed according to varietal and origin characteristics.

For each of these three categories, Luca Maroni awards a maximum of 33 points, which, when added together, result in the decisive final score of maximum 99 points.

We are very proud, that Icardi received 2 times 96 points(!) and as well the other 7 awarded wines received 93 points or more.

He inherited the passion for the vineyards from his father and added to it a personal and meticulous touch when working in the cellar. Extremely curious and visionary, he is always looking at the bigger picture. He is interested in organic farming and biodynamics and he happily spreads his in-depth knowledge to wine enthusiasts who want to know more.

She works with her brother Claudio, heading the marketing department. She spends most of the year abroad, meeting importers and taking part into international fairs to promote our products and export the “Made in Italy” quality brand to the world. Mariagrazia speaks Italian, English, French, German and Piedmontese.

Icardi: Barolo Riserva Serra

Azienda Agricola Icardi recently added a new wine to their portfolio: the Barolo Riserva SERRA DOCG 2015.

BAROLO RISERVA SERRA DOCG 2015

Vineyard exposure: west

Grape variety: Nebbiolo

Soil composition: alternation of white marl and sand layers.

Vines density: about 4200 vines per hectare.

Vine breeding: Gouyot.

Harvest: beginning of October.

Vinification: after pressing and destemming of the bunches, the must ferment in maceration with the skins at a controlled temperature with frequent pumping over, to ensure the right extraction of color and tannins. Maceration lasts from 12 to 15 days.

Aging: the wine matures in big barrels of 5000 liters for about 24 months.

Color: ruby red, brilliant, with orange reflections.

Bouquet: the wine presents a complex and ethereal bouquet with aromas of violets, red fruit jam and licorice but also spices such as pepper and vanilla.

Taste: elegant with dry and balanced tannins, with a good structure.

Pairings: it goes well with red meats, game and aged cheeses.

Icardi :

Proud farmers who have stayed true to their old traditions, keeping a strong bond with the soil.

They believe that the wine production happens in the vineyard more than in the cellar.

There is a deeply respect for the cycle of the seasons and the rhythms of nature.

For this reason they naturally follow the vineyards growing cycles and let flowers and plants grow between the grape rows.

There is no use of nitrogen fertilisers but they allow plants to naturally fixt the nitrogen in the soil.

They do not employ either herbicides or pesticides.

The fertility of their soil is imported through green manure, believing in thinning the vineyards, leaving behind only the best grapes, even when that means reducing their final production.

They allow shoots to grow freely without forcing them into place.

Their work is carried out in full respect and protection of the environment they live in and do that keeping 15 hectares of uncultivated woods to foster animals and plant biodiversity.

PERTINACE:

The winery is located in Pertinace in Treiso, Piedmont, one of the four villages in the Langhe and famous for the production of Barbaresco DOCG.

However, it is also known as the birthplace of Publi Elvio Pertinace, valorous soldier and Roman emperor, who was born here in 126 A.D.

Traits of the great emperor are evident in the character of those who live and work at Cantina Pertinace today- tenacity, a love of the land worked every day, perseverance in winning over new markets and countries, and the importance placed on tradition in wine making are the hallmarks of an enterprise that is a modern, successful business model.
