DOCG STATUS: As one of the oldest wineries in the Montepulciano region, Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta combines a rich history with the highest modern quality standards. The estate is proud of its DOCG status, the highest quality designation for Italian wines. Furthermore, the estate has been fully certified organic since 2015, guaranteeing a pure expression of its terroir.

How is this Vino Nobile made?

The creation of this wine follows strict regulations and a traditional approach focused on elegance and complexity.

Grapes: The blend is primarily made from the local Prugnolo Gentile grape, a clone of the famous Sangiovese.
90% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese): Provides structure, acidity, and the characteristic aromas of cherry and leather.
10% Merlot: Adds softness, roundness, and extra fruity notes.
Aging: After fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in wooden barrels. A combination of large, traditional Slovenian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels (tonneaux) is used. This process develops complex aromas and helps to soften the tannins. Afterward, the wine ages for at least another six months in the bottle before being released.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Gracciano della Seta is a powerful, ruby-red wine that evolves towards garnet with age.

James Suckling awards for Gracciano: 93 Points to the first Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Pieve Gracciano 2021

This new Vino Nobile Pieve Gracciano has a stricter production regulation which foresees:

Grapes grown in a single vineyard of 15 years of age at least
Maximum yield of 7 tons of grapes per hectare
Blend: 85% of Sangiovese minimum. Indigenous red berry Tuscan varieties can be added (Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Mammolo)
Maturation and ageing:: 36 months of which at least 12 months in wood and 12 months in the bottle
A committee of the Consortium will evaluate the quality of the wine before it is released on the market.

The Gracciano Estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Montepulciano region.

In the beginning of the 19th century, Gracciano was owned by the Svetoni family who built the Villa and created the Italian-style gardens that surround it. With over 400 hectares and 22 farms, the very extensive Gracciano Estate also produced a wide variety of typical Tuscan products.

The property was inherited by the current owners, Marco, Vannozza and Galdina della Seta Ferrari Corbelli Greco, through their father Giorgio.

The cellars of the Gracciano Villa still contain several bottles of wine from exceptional vintage years.
Giorgio della Seta, after working for many years abroad as a manager in a multinational company, decided to return to Tuscany and take up the family Estate.

He proceeded to renew the vineyards and build, in 2013, a new winery alongside the traditional unit which is still used for ageing wine in wood.

The winery has always been run by renowned oenologists (such as Nicolò d’Afflitto from 1985 and Beppe Rigoli since 1995) who ensured that the Tenuta di Gracciano produced an excellent Vino Nobile, fully respecting the terroir and using autochthonous vines.

At Gracciano della Seta they are working on the production of

VINO NOBILE DI MONTEPULCIANO PIEVE GRACCIANO

The blend is 100% Sangiovese grown in a vineyard of 23 years of age.
This wine matures for 12 months in third use tonneaux of a capacity of 5 hectolitres.
The first vintage, 2021, will be bottled next month and will spend 18 months in the bottle before being released on the market.

Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta: vintage update: the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2021 is now available

The Vino Nobile has a bright ruby colour, an intense, ripe cherry and plum nose and a dry, balanced and persistent taste of rounded tannins.

Grapes:
90 % Prugnolo Gentile
10% merlot

Try it with traditional dishes such as roasts, game and mature cheeses.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the oldest and most prestigious Tuscan wines: it comes from a clone of the Sangiovese variety which in Montepulciano is called Prugnolo Gentile, because of its characteristic plum bouquet.
The special link between Sangiovese and the terroir, going back to ancient times, as well as the rich sand and clay soil, create the ideal conditions for producing full-bodied, aromatic wines with delicate tannins.
Since 1980, the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a “vino a denominazione di origine controllata (DOCG)” (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin), which corresponds to the highest recognition on the Italian wine market.

THE PRODUCER: the Gracciano Estate is one of the oldest wineries in the Montepulciano region. In the beginning of the 19th century, Gracciano was owned by the Svetoni family who built the Villa and created the Italian-style gardens that surround it. With over 400 hectares and 22 farms, the very extensive Gracciano Estate also produced a wide variety of typical Tuscan products.

Today, the winery covers roughly 70 hectares of which 20 are vineyards. The vines grow on the clay and silty soil of the Gracciano hills, one of the oldest and most prestigious crus of Montepulciano. THE CELLAR: the old cellars of the main villa are currently used only for ageing wine in large barrels and tonneaux.
The new winemaking facility, designed by the Studio Caruso e Torricella in 2013, coexists harmoniously with the old buildings of the Estate, consisting of the Villa and the adjoining farmhouse, as well as with the garden and the surrounding countryside.
The sleek new buildings seem to blend perfectly with the sloping terrain. Their traditional red brick exterior, however, hides state-of-the-art wine-making equipment and machinery.The new unit contains 50, 100 and 120 hl stainless steel vats, with temperature control systems as well as pumping over and punching down equipment.
Ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak barrels (with a capacity of 25-50 hl) and tonneaux (with a capacity of 5 hl) of medium roasted French Allier oak.
A pneumatic wine press, a wine pump and a crusher-distemmer complete the equipment. The grapes are transported from the vineyards on carts with vibrating inclined planes and emptied directly into the crusher.

New vineyard for Gracciano

New vineyard for Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta

Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta recently bought a new vineyard, increasing the total vineyard extension to 20.58 hectares now.

It has a south-east exposure and an altitude of 290 meters above sea level. It is characterized by the same soil type (silt-clay) as the vineyards that surround the Gracciano della Seta winery.

The picture below shows the location of the new acquisition:

AREA: The area is particularly suitable for growing grape vines. The prugnolo gentile variety reveals its full potential through a slow and complete ageing process, helped by good ventilation, the fluctuation between day and night temperatures and excellent exposure. Late frosts and hailstorms are rare in the area.

The vineyard of Nobile di Montepulciano is planted with Sangiovese, 50% planted in 2018 and 50% in 2001.

WINES: The beautiful grapes growing here results in great wines, like the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva, the Rosso di Montepulciano (organic) , the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (organic) or the Rosato Toscana. Starting from the 2018 harvest, all the Gracciano della Seta wines are certified as organic. The estate’s wines can be considered traditional, they are suitable for ageing, but also pleasant to drink when they are young.
