Vinibuoni Crown for Masottina

For the second year in a row Masottina received a ‘Crown’ from the Vinibuoni d’Italia Guide for the wine R.D.O. Ponente Brut Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Rive di Ogliano.

This is a remarkable recognition and is attributed to excellent wines.

R.D.O. Ponente 2022 Brut: Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore Rive di Ogliano DOCG

This Prosecco has a very elegant straw yellow colour with bright greenish-golden hints and a very fine and lingering perlage. The taste is fresh with hints of bergamot, white mulberry, peaches, melons and acacia blossoms. There is a rich mix of aromas that is completed by lemon balm, thyme, mint and sage. The finish is long and well-balanced and closes with a nuance of lime, ginger and spices. The variety is 100% Glera .

R.D.O. Ponente Brut comes from a single vineyard facing south-west. This wine encapsulates all the finesse and elegance of a unique terroir such as Ogliano.

In 2009, when Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore was elevated to DOCG a new indication was introduced: Rive. Which identifies on the label the municipality where the grapes are grown. Ogliano is one of the 43 Rive where Terre di Ogliano and the Dal Bianco family cultivate almost 20% of the entire vine planted area. The Ogliano landscape is the only Conegliano Valdobbiadene area with a glacial origin and this means morenic soil rich and fertile and water that easily penetrates to ensure a natural reserve that is useful in dry periods. Wines from Ogliano are well-rounded, intense and persistent.

Wine Spectator review:

A creamy Prosecco, with mango and mandarin orange fruit flavors that are bright and expressive on a fine, lively bead, plus notes of petrol, fresh thyme and grated ginger. Open-knit and zesty on the finish. Drink now.

Coming from a vineyard facing south-west, this wine encapsulates all the elegance and finesse of a unique terroir such as Ogliano, where its typical features are sealed by a slightly spicy hint that develops in crescendo thanks to its longevity. The wine is made from hand-picked selected grapes, white vinified by the gravity method.

4 wines from Masottina have been awarded at the Prosecco Trophy organized by Falstaff.

The score of 94 points is for the R.D.O. Rive di Ogliano Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG 2020 extra dry.

But not only this one received high scores from Falstaff, also 3 other Prosecco’s got very good results.

Tastingnote

Bright silver-grey with a persistent mousse. Fragrantly fresh tangerines, lemon juice and white flowers, followed by a hint of freshly cut grass and pineapple. On the palate there is an excellent fruit core and well-integrated mousse, displaying great harmony and creaminess, with a long, clear finish.

Tastingnote

Bright silver with very little mousse. Fragrant nose of peach and white flowers, resonating with citrus and some flint. A juicy core and airy mousse, displaying fine salt, but slightly bitter reverberations.

Unesco World Heritage Site:

Nowadays Masottina wines hail from almost 300 hectares of vineyards that extend along the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This vine-covered area has been built up over time with carefully selected vines grown by the family to the integrated Crop Management National Quality System (SQNPI) of organic practices.

However, it is in the Ogliano hills that Masottina expresses its production and quality philosophy with crus from a unique terroir: R.D.O. Ponente and R.D.O. Levante

Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano and Valdobbiadene

Located in north-eastern Italy, the property includes part of the winegrowing landscape of the Prosecco wine production area. The landscape is characterized by ‘hogback’ hills, ciglioni. Small plots of vines on narrow grassy terraces. Forests, small villages and farmland since the 17th century. The use of ciglioni has created a particular chequerboard landscape consisting of rows of vines parallel and vertical to the slopes. In the 19th century the bellussera technique of training the vines contributed to the aesthetic characteristics of the landscape.

Masottina in Wine Spectator’s top 100

Masottina has received the highest recognition from the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 with Rive di Ogliano (R.D.O) extra dry 2019

This is the first time that a ‘Rive’ Prosecco enters the list, and it hails from the historic Conegliano Valdobbiadene winery of Masottina.

This wine comes from a single vineyard facing east, where the vines are over 50 years old. The wine is scented with exotic fruit, citrus fruit, herbs and white flowers and is fresh to the taste, astringent and fruity, flavourful and well-balanced.

This newest award further enhances the experience that started with Robert Parker (award given to R.D.O. 2011) continuing with Decanter, which since 2012 has included it in the best wines of the category every year, and a special mention from Michael Edwards, who declared it : “The champ, a stunning wine with everything.”

Masottina decided to produce Le Rive in 2009, when the new denomination was included in the regulations. Now there are 43 Le Rive, known as ‘Additional Geographical Units.’ In this respect, Vice President Federico dal Bianco says: “We were one of the first to start production of Rive. We are delighted by this recognition, which goes to the Masottina team, our oenoligist, my father Adriano and all the men and women to work in our company, from the vineyards to distribution. We are proud that a Prosecco has received an award two years after its vintage, because this is in line with the project to valorise the past vintages of Prosecco pursued by Masottina. It is a project we are developing in Italy to demonstrate that Prosecco is a wine that can evolve over time.”

Le Rive

Le Rive are crus that produce unique wines, rich in minerals. Each Rive may conincide with a single zone in the denomination, with a precise organoleptic profile. The regulation dictates that the grapes must be picked by hand and the vintage indicated on the label.

The Drinks Business Awards is now already in its 19th year. They have become an authoritative, internationally respected badge of achievement in the alcoholic drinks industry.

For this competition around 200 Proseccos where judged, all of which were assessed without any knowledge of the producer behind them.

The top wines were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their result. Masottina received 3x gold and 1x silver
