The medallists from the Prosecco Masters 2023, organized by The Drinks Business, are known….. and one of them is Masottina !

This company even got 9 medals !!! 5 x silver and 4 x bronze. A great result!

Everyone loves Prosecco:

The demand for Prosecco seems to be absorbing the supply completely. Not only in Italy, but also in other countries all over the world. The levels of the production have increased in recent years. Yes, everyone loves Prosecco !

Prosecco is fun !

Prosecco has diversity and has something to offer every wine drinker. Choose an Extra Brut, an Extra dry or a Prosecco Rosé for example.

Prosecco Rosé: the Pinot Nero is the blending choice, made by the Consorzio, set at 10 – 15%. The remainder is made up of Glera. The Pinot Nero must be vinified in red and come from a territory that belongs to the Prosecco DOC area.

Wine Spectator review:

A creamy Prosecco, with mango and mandarin orange fruit flavors that are bright and expressive on a fine, lively bead, plus notes of petrol, fresh thyme and grated ginger. Open-knit and zesty on the finish. Drink now.

Coming from a vineyard facing south-west, this wine encapsulates all the elegance and finesse of a unique terroir such as Ogliano, where its typical features are sealed by a slightly spicy hint that develops in crescendo thanks to its longevity. The story of Masottina is written in the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, in 2019 listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site and established as one of the 56 most beautiful places in Italy and one of the 1121 most spectacular places in the world.

Rive di Ogliano

R.D.O. (Rive di Ogliano) is the epitome of Masottina’s wine production. Adriano and his brothers were pioneers in discovering Ogliano, believing in this unique terroir in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills, long before its prestige was acknowledged in 2009 with the introduction of the Rive indication.

Ogliano

In 2009, when Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore was elevated to DOCG, a new indication was introduced – ‘Rive’, which identifies on the label the municipality or hamlet where the grapes are grown.
Masottina’s ‘Rive’ wines represent the essence of the territory, they are produced with hand-picked grapes exclusively from a single locality. Ogliano is one of the 43 rive where Terre di Ogliano and the Dal Bianco family cultivate almost 20% of the entire vine planted area.

Brut Rosé awarded with 90 Vinous points !

The Brut Rosé Giovanni Galliano 2018, from the wineproducer Borgo Maragliano in Piemonte, received 90 points from Vinous.

“A burst of sweet smoke gives way to fresh mint, ginger and white strawberries as the 2018th Brut Rosé Giovanni Galliano comes to life in the glass. It washes accross the palate with a silken bead of fine bubbles under an air of rosy florals, coming accross as savory and mineral in style, with a reverberation of bright acidity. The Giovanni Galliano, a varietal Pinot Noir, finishes with a salty flourish and a slightly bitter twang that leaves the mouth watering for more. “(disgorged: October, 2021) – Eric Guido

How this wine is produced:

Upon arrival in the cellar, the Pinot Noir grapes are left to macerate for about five to eight hours at a temperature of 7-8 °C. This is followed by soft pressing to favour the extraction of the must which, characterised by a pretty pink colour, begins its first alcoholic fermentation. Upon completion of fermentation, the wine is drawn off the lees and left at mature in stainless steel tanks for about eight months. In the month of April of the year after harvest, the resulting Pinot Noir is bottled and, after dosage and the immediate addition of yeast, undergoes second fermentation. At the end of this process, which creates the characteristic foam, the wine continues to mature on lees for about 36 months.

Borgo Maragliano:

Borgo Maragliano covers an area of in total 25 hectares of vineyards. The wine is vinified, bottled and packed by members of the Galliano family who preserve a great respect for tradition but at the same time employ the most modern vinification techniques, methods and equipment.

Borgo Maragliano sits 450 metres above sea level, in the heart of Loazzolo on a natural terrace in the Langhe hills. In springtime a gentle wind called the Marin blows in from the sea and crosses Loazzolo. This ‘magical’ breeze, is most welcome as it favours the maturation and the perfume of the grapes.

The wines are the result of a careful and meticulous labour from vines of Moscato, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. They represent the highest expression of this distinctive territory and of its soil.

Nose: white floral scents, hawthorn, red apple skin, wild strawberry, with aromas of raspberry and vanilla.

Palate: strong acidity and fresh finish, persistent and delicate with a fruity note. Dry, sharp and clean.

Pairing: as an aperitif, paired with oysters or a tartare of raw fish, with a platter of cold cuts, with tortellini or meat bollito misto.

4 wines from Masottina have been awarded at the Prosecco Trophy organized by Falstaff.

The score of 94 points is for the R.D.O. Rive di Ogliano Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG 2020 extra dry.

But not only this one received high scores from Falstaff, also 3 other Prosecco’s got very good results.

Bright silver-grey with a persistent mousse. Fragrantly fresh tangerines, lemon juice and white flowers, followed by a hint of freshly cut grass and pineapple. On the palate there is an excellent fruit core and well-integrated mousse, displaying great harmony and creaminess, with a long, clear finish.

Tastingnote

Bright silver with very little mousse. Fragrant nose of peach and white flowers, resonating with citrus and some flint. A juicy core and airy mousse, displaying fine salt, but slightly bitter reverberations.

Unesco World Heritage Site:

Nowadays Masottina wines hail from almost 300 hectares of vineyards that extend along the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills, an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This vine-covered area has been built up over time with carefully selected vines grown by the family to the integrated Crop Management National Quality System (SQNPI) of organic practices.

However, it is in the Ogliano hills that Masottina expresses its production and quality philosophy with crus from a unique terroir: R.D.O. Ponente and R.D.O. Levante

Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano and Valdobbiadene

Located in north-eastern Italy, the property includes part of the winegrowing landscape of the Prosecco wine production area. The landscape is characterized by ‘hogback’ hills, ciglioni. Small plots of vines on narrow grassy terraces. Forests, small villages and farmland since the 17th century. The use of ciglioni has created a particular chequerboard landscape consisting of rows of vines parallel and vertical to the slopes. In the 19th century the bellussera technique of training the vines contributed to the aesthetic characteristics of the landscape.

The international jury from the Mundus Vini International Wine Award awarded in total:

43x Grand Gold, 1685 x Gold and 1294 x a silver medal to the best wines of the MUNDUS VINI Spring Tasting.

Italy leads the top 5 winemaking nations, winning a total of 5 Grand Gold, 364 Gold and 364 Silver medals.

2 of these gold medals and 2 of these silver medals are for Masottina:

The crowning glory of the Ai Palazzi line of reds is Montesco.

The story of Montesco began with the 1996 harvest, but is rooted farther back in time, with studies performed to identify clones, rootstock and blend percentages. Montesco comes from a single clone for all the varieties and from a single rootstock. Nowadays the perfect blend is achieved directly in the vineyard in which are planted:

43% Cabernet Sauvignon
30% Merlot
17% French Cabernet Franc
10% Marzemino

Therefore, every year the actual percentage of the varieties that make up Montesco is determined by nature. Cabernet and Merlot are vinified together, whereas Marzemino is lightly dried for a few weeks to exalt its softness and express its typical features to the utmost.

This well-structured, full-bodied red wine blends perfectly the softness of Merlot, the strong personality of Cabernet Franc, the unmistakable elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon and the vivacity of Marzemino.

Collezione 96 originates from the outstanding award, 96 points, that Prosecco DOC Brut achieved at the wine competition held by Decanter Magazine in 2017. Today, the same style, based on the tireless search of harmony, is reproduced for the whole range of products, signed by Adriano Dal Bianco.

Borgo Maragliano’s Brut Nature Cuvée Germana Beltrame has received the 5 grappoli (grapes). This is the highest award from Bibenda, the Italian Sommelier Foundation.

Brut Nature Cuvée Germana Beltrame:

The Brut Nature, a high quality sparkling wine made with traditional method is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks.

A Brut Nature obtained from the combination of young and pungent vintages. With older, much more evolved vintages, capable of honoring and respecting the Chardonnay cultivar.

This Brut perfectly combines with shellfish, raw fish, soups, and fresh cheeses but this high quality sparkling wine is also perfect on its own.

The delicious entry makes it very seductive and harmonious as it lingers on the palate. The structured bouquet features sensations of fruit, aromatic herbs and honey, which bring out the true nature of the Chardonnay grape.

The remarkable flavour expresses the true characteristics of a great grape grown in a very hostile terroir.
