ORVIETO CLASSICO SUPERIORE CAMPO DEL GUARDIANO

Following bottling this Orvieto Classico Superiore is aged in Palazzone’s cellar for many months. The complexity, the aromas and the freshness of the fruit remain intact for years proving the wine’s astonishing capacity to age beautifully.
TASTING NOTES
Intense straw color with sharp green reflections.
The nose is protound, retineds and prolonged; on the palate silky and well structured, vibrant and persistent.
Goes well with dishes that are not only powerful but also restrained and delicately balanced, recipes of veal, fowl, and pork, in the finest Umbrian tradition.

In 1969 the Dubini family bought the property “Palazzone”, constructed by Cardinal Teodorico at the bidding of Pope Boniface VIII as a hostel for pilgrims on their way to Rome to celebrate the Jubilee of 1300 A.D. Today after a restoration with respect for the noble architecture, “Palazzone” is a boutique hotel with elegant suites. The hilly portion of the land adjacent to Rocca Ripesena, with its superb view of Orvieto on its majestic crag, consisted of sedimentary soil and clay.

Angelo Dubini decided to plant 25 hectares to vines of varieties that he expected would make wine of great complexity and character. In 1982 his two sons, Giovanni and Lodovico, made the first small vintage from these grapes. In1988 their vintage was sufficient to justify the construction of a winery to process all their own grapes and also to organise and begin the commercial marketing of what is now “Palazzone” wine regarded as one of the most significant labels in Umbria.

The demand for rare, authentic, and historically significant wines continues to grow on the global stage and Borgo Prunatelli is leading the charge in Tuscany.
We are exceptionally proud to announce that they have been awarded prestigious medals by The WineHunter commission at the Merano WineFestival, specifically for their masterclass in reviving ancient native grapes.

Borgo Prunatelli’s mission goes far beyond traditional winemaking; it is an active preservation of the Val di Sieve’s viticultural heritage.

Fattoria Fibbiano presents a renewed look for its wines with a range of redesigned labels that bring a fresh, contemporary expression to the estate’s identity.

While the wines themselves remain unchanged, the new labels reinterpret Fattoria Fibbiano’s visual language, combining a modern aesthetic with the character and authenticity that define the winery. The result is a refined presentation designed to reflect the estate’s Tuscan roots while offering a distinctive and cohesive presence on the shelf.

A new look for the same wines — preserving the quality and personality of Fattoria Fibbiano, while giving the bottles a renewed identity.

The producer
Fattoria Fibbiano in the municipality of Terricciola, in the province of Pisa in the Era valley in Tuscany.
Terricciola, set in the hills between Pisa and Volterra, is part of an area which is very rich in history and traditions.

Fattoria Fibbiano is a family-run farm. The whole family has lived and worked here since 1997. Giuseppe, the father, deals with the general management of the estate and takes care of the vineyards and countryside. Matteo, the eldest of the two sons, is in charge of marketing the wines and his brother, Nicola, is the winemaker who oversees the entire wine-making process. rich in history and traditions.

The Vineyeards
20 hectares of vineyards. Most of them are south-facing. 2.5 hectares have been planted in a north-facing direction with the aim of producing sweeter grapes in dry periods, which in recent years have become more frequent. All the red grape varieties are positioned on top of the hill while the white grape varieties have been planted on the valley floor.
The soil originates from the sea and is rich in fossil shells from the Pliocene epoch, and medium-textured corals.

The farm has always grown autochthonous grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Sangiovese Forte, Sangiovese Polveroso, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino for red wines, and Vermentino and Colombana for white wines.

The Cantoni family regard the environment as an important part of our heritage, to be protected, not as a resource to be exploited. The quality of a product is inextricably linked to the way we care for the land. The land surrounding the farm is only treated using organic fertilisers and human intervention is kept to a minimum. From the point of view of energy consumption, the agritourism is completely self-sufficient with a 30-KW photovoltaic plant, a solar plant for the production of fresh water, and central heating which uses the wood obtained from pruning the river banks and from clearing the woodland.

Three wines that reveal different facets of Valtellina: its complexity, elegance, and remarkable vocation for winemaking.

From the steep terraces to the bottle, the mountain remains the same….What changes is the way its story is expressed.

The beginning:
Since 2008, Cristina Scarpellini has been the driving force behind Tenuta Scerscé, a winery dedicated to expressing the unique character of Valtellina. From the outset, she has approached this extraordinary Alpine wine region with respect, patience, and a strong commitment to its fragile landscape.

After earning a Law degree in Milan and completing research at the University of Paris Sorbonne–Panthéon Assas II, Cristina built a career specializing in business internationalization. It was through this journey that she discovered Valtellina and its Nebbiolo, inspiring her to pursue a new path in winemaking. Today, her work is defined by a deep understanding of the territory and the meticulous care required to cultivate vineyards on Valtellina’s steep terraced slopes. Through dedication and vision, Tenuta Scerscé has become a distinctive expression of one of Italy’s most remarkable mountain wine regions.

The Philosophy
The winery is driven by a strong commitment to creating wines that are a direct expression of their territory, conveying its distinctive character while reflecting the producer’s mindset, personality, and unwavering pursuit of quality.

Over the years, this philosophy has led to an increasingly meticulous approach in the vineyard. Particular attention is given to the analysis of the soil in each vineyard, allowing the team to better understand its characteristics and enhance the potential of each site.
The new cellar has been designed according to sustainable and innovative principles. It provides a modern environment in which the winery can continue to study and experiment with different types of tanks, while allowing for longer periods of bottle ageing and further development of the wines.
At its heart, the philosophy represents a link between past and present: a meeting of inherited manual skills and contemporary tools, always with the utmost respect for tradition. People remain central to this approach, playing an essential role in shaping the winery’s character and identity.
The company logo reflects this connection with the land. It depicts the traditional two-pronged hoe, an agricultural tool rooted in local farming culture and traditionally used to work the soil around the shoots and roots of the vines.

The tornado in 2002: the moment that changed everything:

Today, 24 years after the tornado of 6 August 2002, we look back at a moment that reshaped the future of the Val di Sieve. What began as a day of devastation became the unlikely beginning of one of Tuscany’s most remarkable grape rediscoveries: Sanforte, the native variety now grown organically at Borgo Prunatelli under the care of the Grati family.

6 August 2002: The Storm That Revealed a Secret

On a hot summer afternoon, a rare and violent tornado ripped through the hills of the Val di Sieve and Rufina. As a result, terraces collapsed, vines snapped, and the landscape transformed within hours.

A Discovery Hidden in the Ruins: Amid the destruction, something remarkable emerged. Two days later, during an inspection of the damaged vineyards near Prunatelli, a single vine immediately drew attention. Moreover, it looked vigorous, ancient, and completely different from the surrounding varieties. Its thick trunk and deep‑rooted strength therefore suggested centuries of survival, hinting at a story that was only beginning to unfold.

The Start of an Unexpected Journey: That single vine didn’t just survive the storm. No, it sparked a discovery that no one saw coming. What began as a routine damage assessment turned into the beginning of a story that would reshape the local wine history.

Historical identification and genetic analysis

Together with the University of Florence and ampelographer Roberto Bandinelli, the vine was analysed and identified as Sangiovese Forte. This was a historical name once used for a darker, more powerful Tuscan grape.

To honour this heritage, the revived variety was named Sanforte.

But the story didn’t end there. Modern genetic studies later revealed something that was even more surprising: Sanforte is not related to Sangiovese at all, but a completely distinct native variety that had its own lineage and identity.

Official Recognition: in 2007, it was officially registered in the National Register of Grape Varieties under the name Sanforte.

From a Single Vine to a Living Heritage

It began as a field observation but evolved into more than a decade of research.

In total, 16 original Sanforte vines were found across the Val di Sieve. A proof of the grape’s deep historical roots in this territory.

A first micro‑vinification in 2002 produced a tiny but astonishingly expressive wine by using grapes from just five vines. Even in one of the most challenging years that the region had ever faced, Sanforte showed its unmistakable character.

The Grati Family: Guardians of Prunatelli

Rebirth:

The rebirth of Sanforte is inseparable from the Grati family, custodians of Borgo Prunatelli and long‑standing figures in the Rufina and Val di Sieve wine landscape.

Patience and vision:

Their philosophy — rooted in biodiversity, heritage, and respect for the land — made them the natural stewards of this rediscovered grape. They nurtured Sanforte with patience and vision, from a handful of ancient vines into a living and thriving part of the estate.

Organic:

Today, Sanforte is grown organically at Borgo Prunatelli and vinified only in select years. It reflects both the rarity of the grape and the family’s commitment to authenticity.
