A Tale of Two Harvests: How Nature and Smart Investments are shaping a great vintage

The grape harvest is always a season of anticipation, and this year we are thrilled to share positive updates from two of our producers: Masseria del Feudo and Torre Raone.
While they experienced different growing conditions, both estates are reporting a fantastic harvest—a testament to both natural blessings and dedicated expertise.

Masseria del Feudo: the prolonged warm weather was followed by a significant temperature shift between the end of August and the beginning of September. Combined with the rainfall in July and carefully managed irrigation, these conditions helped restore balance to the vines and supported a slow, healthy ripening process.

The result was a beautiful harvest of healthy, vibrant grapes, with excellent balance and freshness—a true reflection of a season shaped by Mother Nature’s perfect timing.

The 2026 vintage has certainly been among the most difficult experienced at Torre Raone, with high temperatures starting as early as May and continuing uninterrupted until mid-September.

With a scorching and dry summer, the grapes ripened extremely early, so much so that the harvest began on August 5.

“Thanks to the reservoir, we were able to carry out emergency irrigation, which saved the crop and led to a truly rewarding harvest. The lake, which collected rainwater during the winter, was undoubtedly a huge ally for us and will be a great resource if it rains during the coming winter.”

Piemonte had a challenging vintage, but the right timing and Carlo’s expertise resulted in a beautifully refreshing Moscato.

Light, fresh and wonderfully versatile — whether you’re pairing it with an aperitivo or fruit salads.

Pssst… want to know a secret? It’s also wonderful simply on its own (chilled of course).

THE WINE

MOSCATO D’ ASTI DOCG

Grapes: 100% Moscato Bianco di Canelli

Winemaking: After harvesting, the ripe Moscato grapes undergo soft pressing. The product obtained is chilled to 0 °C to prevent fermentation. Each individual batch is filtered and put in a pressurised tank which retains the carbon dioxide and warms the product, which is still completely sugary, to a temperature of 15 °C. This promotes the fermentation process which is allowed to continue until an alcohol content of 5.5% vol. is reached. The product, which is now Moscato d’Asti, is chilled to a temperature of 0 °C to block fermentation.

Tasting notes: A high-altitude Moscato, full-bodied and velvety with an intense bouquet featuring scents of candied fruit, acacia blossom and a musky background. The scent of “violet” is quite unique.

Podere Il Castellaccio is situated in Castagneto Carducci, across the seaward side of Segalari Hills, at an altitude of 194 meters a.s.l.
Due to its geographic position, the vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean climate, with more solar radiations, a better thermal excursion and a higher ventilation.

An historic Estate

The passion of one man marks the beginning of the history of Podere Il Castellaccio. In the 1960s, Luigi Corradini, the maternal grandfather of current owner Alessandro Scappini, found an estate of 18 hectares on the hills of Castagneto Carducci. The area is Bolgheri, a place that was not yet world famous and had nothing to recommend it other than the essence of the land and the potential it had to produce great wine.
To plant his first vineyards Luigi was only able to use grapes that were native to the Chianti and Scansano area. Thus were Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda, Sangiovese planted – just a few hectares, native wine varieties and a small wine cellar. Over the years, the management of the estate gradually transitioned into the hands of his son Roberto.

However, it was only in 2009 that the winery Podere Il Castellaccio was founded by Alessandro Scappini, the third generation in charge of the estate.
Alessandro Scappini, born and raised in Bolgheri, decided indeed to work with a 60 years old family vineyard planted with ancient varieties. In the meantime he also starts growing the signature grapes of the DOC and makes his debut on the market with its first Bolgheri wine with the vintage 2015. His path inside the DOC is completed in the vintage 2018 when his Bolgheri Superiore Il Castellaccio is born and it was released for the first time on the market at the begin of 2021.

“A sip from the past, while looking to the future” is the catchphrase used by this highly-manicured Bolgheri winery.

The family passion and the expertise added by the winemaker Attilio Pagli have the aim to tell the story of the region through the salvaging of ancient varieties that are inextricably linked to the tradition of Tuscan wine, specifically in the area of Bolgheri.

The older vineyards, occupying more than 2 hectares, are planted with Tuscan natives Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello.

Manual selection of the bunches, soft de-stemming, fermentation at controlled temperature, 32 days of skin contact.
Aged for 48 months in 20 Hl Slavonian oak Barrels and 7,5 hl French oak Barrels.

Color: deep, bright ruby red with garnet reflection.
Aroma: intense bouquet with great complexity. Sour cherry, violet, blood orange, followed by spice with perceptible hints of leather and tobacco.
Flavor: well-structured and intense. Rich, elegant, with a velvety texture and great persistence.
Food Pairings: perfect match for red meats and game.

THE WINERY:

Founded in 1989, the winery Patrizia Cencioni is now managed by three women who continue a tradition started by their grandfather, Giuseppe Cencioni, one of the founders of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino.
The estate spans about 50 hectares, including 8 dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino vineyards and 7 to olive groves.

SNAIL for the winery

A mark of excellence from the Slow Food, assigned to wineries for the way they interpret values (organoleptic, territorial, and environmental) in harmony with the Slow Food philosophy, combined with excellent quality. A Snail’s wines also meet the criterion of a good quality-to-price ratio, taking into account when and where they were produced.”

In 1969 the Dubini family bought the property “Palazzone”, constructed by Cardinal Teodorico at the bidding of Pope Boniface VIII as a hostel for pilgrims on their way to Rome to celebrate the Jubilee of 1300 A.D. Today after a restoration with respect for the noble architecture, “Palazzone” is a boutique hotel with elegant suites. The hilly portion of the land adjacent to Rocca Ripesena, with its superb view of Orvieto on its majestic crag, consisted of sedimentary soil and clay.

Angelo Dubini decided to plant 25 hectares to vines of varieties that he expected would make wine of great complexity and character. In 1982 his two sons, Giovanni and Lodovico, made the first small vintage from these grapes. In1988 their vintage was sufficient to justify the construction of a winery to process all their own grapes and also to organise and begin the commercial marketing of what is now “Palazzone” wine regarded as one of the most significant labels in Umbria.

THE WINES:
The winery produces a variety of wines, including Campo del Guardiano, Terre Vineate, Vendemmia Tardiva, Muffa Nobile, Musco, Armaleo, Sangiovese, Grechetto, Viognier, Pinot Grigio Ramato, Vignarco Bianco and Vignarco Rosso.
